This month marks 41 proud years since the day we opened the doors of our original Coffee House for the first time. Each year that passes gives us another opportunity to reflect on our history – and we jump at the chance! We cherish the pioneering role we played in the world-renowned Seattle coffee scene. Our origin story continues to inspire us.
When we opened in May 1980, Pegasus Coffee House became the first Seattle-area coffee roaster to serve espresso over the counter. Paying homage to the famed coffee houses of Europe, we offered espresso, cappuccino, tea and pastries right from the start. Our dining area featured comfortable seating, a variety of local and international newspapers, and rotating exhibits of local art. Our converted space in an old, red-brick building at Winslow Wharf quickly became all we had dreamed it could be — a thriving community hub fueled with lively discussions, live performances and unparalleled coffee.
Today, as our company evolves, the legacy of our early years lives on. Our lattes still feature the delicious espresso blend our founder, David Dessinger, developed more than 40 years ago. Our walls continue to showcase local art. And, most importantly, Pegasus Coffee House continues to serve as a vital community gathering place, where Islanders and visitors alike connect, discuss, reflect, relax, study, create and celebrate every day – all with others over great coffee.
If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that community and connection with others is of immeasurable value. And as we reflect on the past 41 years, we’re certain that – no matter how good our coffee is and has been — it’s our focus on community and on people that has enabled us to survive this long and, at times, thrive.
This month, we’re celebrating our 41st anniversary together by bringing back the beloved Anniversary Blend for a limited time. A 100% Direct Trade offering, containing four varietals sourced directly from our Pegasus partner farms in Nicaragua and Guatemala, it offers notes of juicy citrus, cinnamon, and dark chocolate and comes in special, commemorative bags. It is available for a limited time only on our website, or at the Pegasus Coffee House on Bainbridge Island.
But whether you buy our coffee or not – please do help us celebrate our anniversary by sitting down and connecting with others in whatever safe and healthy way you can. Because at the end of the day, it’s our connection with each other and our communities that will enable us all to survive and thrive.
Cheers to 41 years of Pegasus Coffee!

About Pegasus Coffee
Pegasus Coffee has hand-roasted small batches of high-quality arabica coffee on Bainbridge Island since 1979. A pioneer from the beginning, Pegasus introduced the European-style coffee house to the region at its first store on Bainbridge Island in 1980. Shortly thereafter, Pegasus made history when it opened the first coffee bar in downtown Seattle. The company’s innovative spirit and dedication to the roasting craft have led to the unique, delicious blends and single-origin coffees – and the loyal customer following – it is still known for today.
