One of Seattle’s original specialty coffee companies begins a new chapter in its proud, 40-year history.

Pegasus Coffee has been acquired by Matt Grady, a Seattle-area investor and entrepreneur with a passion for the coffee industry

Under Mr. Grady’s ownership, Pegasus will redouble its commitment to producing delicious, high-scoring coffee, and will reacquaint customers with its history as a pioneer of the U.S. specialty coffee industry

Pegasus will also celebrate 40 years in business this year with the launch of a commemorative Anniversary Blend coffee, more modern and informative packaging, a new online store, and other promotions throughout the year

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA Pegasus Coffee, one of the elite forefathers of Pacific Northwest specialty coffee roasting, today announced new ownership and a plan to commemorate its 40th anniversary over the next year that reinforces the uniqueness of its legacy while laying a foundation for future growth.

New Ownership

On October 31, 2019, Matt Grady, a Seattle-area business leader and entrepreneur with a passion for the coffee business, purchased Pegasus Coffee from Sunny Lee, who had acquired the company from Pegasus founder David Dessinger in 2015.

“I’m incredibly excited to join Pegasus,” said Mr. Grady, who plans to take an active role in managing the business, “a company that is known not only for its great-tasting coffee and loyal customer following, but also for the pivotal role it played in the history of the Seattle coffee scene. As I learned this history, I realized this was a special business with a unique story that I wanted to invest in and grow.”

Mr. Grady’s purchase of Pegasus brings with it a renewed commitment to select and roast only high-quality, great-tasting coffees. “David Dessinger started Pegasus in 1979 to bring coffee of excellent quality and character to the Seattle area,” Mr. Grady said. “We intend to build on this decades-long tradition by sourcing only high-scoring, sustainably grown coffees and roasting them across the light-dark roast spectrum – and always for maximum flavor.”

Celebrating 40 Years: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

Pegasus is entering this new chapter in its history just in time to celebrate another important milestone. December 2019 marks 40 years since Dessinger began roasting coffee commercially under the Pegasus name.

To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Pegasus will introduce a number of improvements for the benefit of customers over the coming year. Specifically, Pegasus will:

– provide greater transparency into the origins, tasting notes, and freshness of its products via more modern and informative packaging

– enable wholesale and retail customers to discover, research and purchase Pegasus Coffee offerings online via an expanded website

– launch a 40th Anniversary Blend coffee, highlighting its Direct Trade relationships with coffee farmers in Nicaragua and Guatemala

– develop new retail experiences for customers on Bainbridge Island and beyond

About Pegasus Coffee

Pegasus Coffee has hand-roasted small batches of high-quality arabica coffee on Bainbridge Island since 1979. A pioneer from the beginning, Pegasus introduced the European-style coffee house to the region at its first store on Bainbridge Island in 1980. Shortly thereafter, Pegasus made history when it opened the first coffee bar in downtown Seattle. The company’s innovative spirit and dedication to the roasting craft have led to the unique, delicious blends and single-origin coffees – and the loyal customer following – it is still known for today.
